FOOTBALL RANKINGS: Eastside holds down No. 5 spot, puts distance between itself and Troup County

Although Eastside’s 56-0 trouncing of Druid Hills last Friday didn’t push it further up the rankings, the fifth-ranked Eagles did create some more space between itself and No. 6 Troup County.

In the previous week, Eastside bested Troup for that No. 5 spot by just a point. But in the latest Georgia Sportswriters Association rankings released Tuesday morning, that chasm between fifth and sixth grew to 16 points. The Eagles also closed the gap a bit on fourth-ranked St. Pius X, coming unjust nine points behind the next spot up.

The Golden Lions have a bye week Friday before closing out its regular season against Stephens County next week. Meanwhile, Eastside will host Henry County (3-5, 2-2 in Region 4-AAAA) in a 7:30 p.m. Friday night kickoff for homecoming. The Eagles will finish the regular season next Friday at Hampton (3-5, 2-3), and if they win out, they’ll be the first Newton County football team to finish a regular season undefeated.

Take a look at the rest of this week’s Georgia Sportswriters Association high school football rankings.
