PREP SOCCER: Lady Eagles come back to tie Whitewater
Soccer column

COVINGTON, Ga. — Last Friday’s matchup between Eastside and Whitewater was so close that no winner could be determined. When all was said and done, the match ended in a 3-3 tie.

If it wasn’t for a strong second half by the Lady Eagles, though, the match could’ve played out differently.

After Lauren Davis gave Eastside an early 1-0 advantage in the 17th minute of action, it fell behind 3-1 early in the second half.

Davis soon made her presence known again following the third goal by Whitewater.

She exploded around the Lady Wildcat defense and fired a rocket into the corner-cutting the Whitewater lead to 3-2 with 13:09 left in the game.

With 11:32 left in the match, Joanna Funes was fouled 45 yards out. Mallory Shurtz’ follow-up free kick into the center of the Whitewater goal was mishandled by the Lady Wildcat keeper before Lady Eagle Abigail Morgan fired a shot in to tie the match at 3-3.

Morgan’s goal concluded the scoring for the night and the match ended in a tie.

As a result, the Lady Eagles go to  2-1-1 on the 2022 season.

Head coach Joel Singleton commended his team’s ability to contend and come back for the tie.

“Offensively we hung around and then just made some plays when we got down 3-1,” Singleton said. “Lauren Davis and Joanna Funes kept the pressure on them. Abigail Morgan was in the right place all night and it paid off on the third goal. It was a playoff atmosphere and type of game. I’m so proud of how we battled back after getting down two goals.”
