The Eastside girls' soccer team is at a level where it hasn't been before.
The Lady Eagles are now looking to take another historic step today when they travel to Columbus in the second round of the Class AAA state playoffs.
Eastside defeated Westside 3-0 at Cousins Middle School Friday and, as the second seed, will now travel to face the top seed out of 6-AAA, Columbus High.
The Blue Devils (15-4) will pose a much more difficult challenge to the Lady Eagles (12-6-1), which had little trouble in their first-round matchup.
Eastside dominated behind Amber Lafond, who will surely garner more attention from the Blue Devils.
Columbus is the fourth-ranked team in Class AAA behind a stout defense. The Blue Devils have allowed less than a goal per game (.83), giving up just 15 all season.
Columbus has won three straight, including beating Riverwood 2-1 in the first round of the state tournament Friday. Prior to that, the Blue Devils had back-to-back shutouts, beating Eagles Landing 2-0 and Troup 9-0.
While teams struggled to score against Columbus, the Blue Devils didn't have a lot of problems putting their own shots in the net. Columbus has 3.9 goals per game, or 71 on the season.
The Lady Eagles have put 75 goals in the net, good enough for 4.2 per game. However, Eastside has given up 1.8 goals per game, 33 on the season.
Eastside has gone five games without losing, topping Luella 5-3, Rockdale 6-0, tying Morgan County 2-2 and beating Jackson 5-0 in the regular season finale. The Lady Eagles longest winning streak was six games from April 15 - May 10.
The Blue Devils bettered that streak by winning 11 straight from March 1 through March 28. Columbus' only loss of March came to ninth-ranked Riverwood, 1-0, on March 30.
