COVINGTON, Ga. -- Although the baseball season has ended for Newton County baseball teams, the postseason accolades are just beginning to come streaming in.

When the All-Region 4-AAAA team was released late last week, it was Eastside senior catcher Austin Holloway who shared Region Player of the Year honors with Woodward’s Ryan Glass.

Holloway, a Georgia College baseball signee, had a strong season for the Eagles who finished the 2017 campaign with a 20-9 record overall and a 12-6 mark in region play, placing Eastside in third place behind Woodward and Luella.

The Eagles narrowly lost its best 2-of-3 state first round playoffs series at Spalding this past weekend after dropping a 7-5 decision to the Jaguars on Saturday afternoon.

Holloway was also named first team catcher. He shared first team honors with teammate Cole Green who was the only Eagle infielder to be named to the first team roster.

Senior outfielder Josh Sims, a James Madison football signee, was named as a first team outfielder and pitcher Ryan Shirley nabbed first team pitching honors.

In Class 3-AAAAAA, Alcovy placed two of its athletes on the all-region first team roster. It was catcher Walker Edmondson and pitcher Dalton Smith who were recognized as top performers.

Edmondson was one of the more productive players in the county, sporting a .392 batting average with 11 doubles and 17 RBIs. Meanwhile Smith shined on the mound with a 4.30 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched. The duo were arguably Alcovy’s top players for a squad that finished 4-22-1 in 2017.

We’ll bring you more All-Region team information as it becomes available to us.

Former Newton Ram standout Jakai Newton will officially be searching for a new home.

Newton formally declared his intent to transfer from Indiana University on March 24 after entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Newton has struggled with injuries throughout his basketball career, which has kept him off the floor.

The 2023 Newton Ram graduate suffered a knee injury during his senior year of high school. The same injury cost him his first season at Indiana.

After receiving a medical redshirt from the NCAA, Newton would only play four games in the 2024-25 season due to numerous lower body injuries. In those four appearances, he averaged 1.5 PPG and 0.8 RPG at 4.5 MPG.

However, when on the court, Newton was efficient. In just his sophomore season at Newton High School, Newton shot 34 percent from three-point range and was an efficient contributor to several Newton teams alongside players like Stephon Castle, Jabez Jenkins and Marcus Whitlock, among others.
