Year in Sports: Patriots softball wins region title

It was a magical year for the Heritage varsity softball team, as the Patriots captured their first region title since 2002.

Heritage went 26-7, running through the region on its way to the the region postseason tournament.

There, the Patriots bested Region 8-AAAAA rival Loganville 7-1, clinching the tournament title.

Heritage entered the Class AAAAA State Softball Tournament as the region's No. 1 seed, falling to Pope in the second round.

The Patriots took home a slew of postseason awards, with pitcher Kierra Camp and outfielder MaCarri Wilkerson earning all-state honors. Wilkerson was also named the region's Player of the Year, while Camp was honored with region Pitcher of the Year accolades.

Heritage coach Jason McBay was named the region's Coach of the Year.

"Two of our goals this season were to win the region and to beat Loganville every time we played them," McBay said. "We checked both of those off ... it feels good."
