An 88-year-old Decatur woman was killed in a chain reaction crash involving four vehicles on Sigman Road Thursday night.
The accident occurred on Dec. 13, at approximately 7 p.m. on Sigman Road at Old Camp Trail.
A vehicle was stopped on Sigman Road waiting on traffic to pass so that it could make a left turn onto Old Camp Trail.
While the first vehicle was stopped, a second vehicle rear-ended that vehicle, causing it to travel across the opposite lane and sideswipe a third vehicle before coming to a rest on Old Camp Trail.
After the second vehicle rear-ended the first vehicle, it continued traveling into the opposite lane and struck a fourth vehicle before coming to a stop on Sigman Road.
The driver of the first vehicle was treated at the scene and released with no substantial injuries.
The drivers of the third and fourth vehicles were both transported by ambulance to an Atlanta hospital, but their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
The driver of the second vehicle was seriously injured and was transported to Rockdale Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead from the injuries sustained in the accident.
She has been identified as Rachel Fowler, 88, of Decatur.
The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. An autopsy is expected to be performed to determine if a medical issue led to the accident.
