Salem High School students and Interact Club spent the day in service Saturday morning as part of Hands On Atlanta's "9/11 Days of Change" by repainting parking lot numbers, building picnic benches and tables, and planting flowers. A few Rockdale Rotary members also came out to participate.
Also on Saturday, the Rockdale County Cooperative Extension held the third annual Family Fun Day at the Farmer's Market, with an apple pie baking contest and a sweet potato contest.
Sweet potato contest winners were (pictured left to right) Roger Hatch, represented by Mimi Soileau, first place for heaviest (4 pounds); Pam Stapley of the Master Gardeners, first place for longest potato (2 feet, 10 inches); Mya Harper, third place longest potato (12 inches); Catherine Dash, third place for heaviest potato (1 pound, 2 ounces); Jimmy Harris, second place for heaviest potatoe (3 pounds, 4 ounces) and second place for longest potato (12.5 inches).
Pie contest winners were:
Budding Bakers (12 and under): Conner Tinsley, first place, Carly Tinsley, second place
In-Betweens (13-19 years old): Jenna Chrisman, first place, Rashad Holmes, second place
Amateurs: Peggy Parker, first place, Crystal Tinsley, second place, Charlotte Clayton, third place
Professionals: Deanna Williams, first place, Robert Holmes, second place, Jim Pliat, third place
