Fundraising plans are well underway throughout the community in support of the third annual Kim Atkins Chance Walk for Angels event for Sat., March 2.
Last year the event, which culminates with an 8-mile walk in Conyers, raised $40,000 for breast cancer. Organizers are hoping to exceed that goal this year by encouraging the community to get involved.
"Several of the teams (of walkers) have been hosting fundraising events such as breakfasts or dinners to raise money," organizer Jean Yontz said. "We really have a lot of fun with this event...right until the very end."
The walk in honor or memory of any cancer patient begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 2 and makes an 8 mile loop before returning to Olde Town Conyers. This is the third year for the walk that was started in memory of Kimberly Chance Atkins.
"We spending the money that we raise locally, and it's making a difference," Yontz said. "All funds are donated to Rockdale Medical Center and Newton Medical Center to distribute vouchers for mammograms for those in need."
This year's entry fee requires walkers to raise $300, which can be either donated by the walker or raised through fundraisers, sponsorships or donations. All walkers will receive a T-shirt and a goodie bag. Participants will also receive prizes for categories including most money raised, most money raised per team, oldest walker, youngest walker and most determined walker.
