The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5290, in Conyers, is holding a series of spaghetti dinner fundraisers on the second Fridays of the month, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The post is holding the fundraisers to replenish the money lost when an unidentified suspect ran out of the hall with the post’s bingo earnings earlier this year in February. The suspect escaped with the funds and no arrest was made. Post commander Chuck Koons said the post has raised about half the amount of the stolen funds. Koons said an incident such as that "takes our wind out of our sails," The funds are used for awards such as the upcoming Loyalty Day event, in on May 7, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., where excellent emergency responders and Teachers of the Year are recognized. Programs such as the Patriot’s Pen contest for middle schoolers and Voice of Democracy speech and scholarship contest for high schoolers are also funded by the VFW. Other fundraisers coming up in the year include the Buddy Poppy donation drive on Memorial Day and July 4th weekend. For more information, call Koons at 770-483-0819.
