Thanksgiving is a time for just that, but it’s also a time to make sure everyone has something to give thanks for. And something everyone should have on Thanksgiving is a a good meal and good company.

The folks behind longtime Conyers barbecue brand Glenn’s BBQ are trying to provide just that.

The "Unto the Least of These" Thanksgiving Day dinner is a tradition put into place in 1987 by the Yontz family. The title comes from a Bible verse.

"We thought it was a great way to give back to the community," said the matriarch of the Yontz clan, Jean. "And the fact that there are a lot of people who don’t have anybody, it fit what I was doing in the community with what the restaurant wanted to do." But, when Glenn’s closed a few years back, the tradition went away as well. Now that Glenn Jr. has taken on the business, re-opening it on 1377 Old McDonough Highway, the tradition has been revived. Phone is (678) 964-2477.

The event, which will serve more than 200 people on Thanksgiving Day, is open to those who have "no one to turn to," as Yontz said.

"It started out with just our family doing it," Yontz said. "Then, as people found out about it, the employees would want to come up and serve. It’s a way of giving back."

The meal will begin service at about 11 a.m. and go until roughly 2 p.m., and will a traditional Turkey Day meal with turkey, green beans, corn, sweet potato soufflé, squash casserole, bread and pumpkin or pecan pie.

"We are very blessed to have a wonderful family," Yontz said. "Sometimes that’s all you have on this earth is your family and you forget there are people that don’t have family. The atmosphere is very friendly, very open (and everyone will) all sit intermingled with everyone. It’s a sweet time of fellowship and a time to help those that are in need."

The Barksdale Boys and Girls Club is also serving a free Thanksgiving Day dinner from 12:30 p.m at 1015 O’Kelly Street, Conyers. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Thanksgiving meal, also sponsored by New Life Family Christian Center, Popeye’s Chicken and Ribs, with the Boys and Girls club.
