Dear Editor: As a World War II veteran, this note is to express my appreciation for the "A Veteran’s Story" appearing in The Rockdale News. Many veterans are reluctant to elaborate on their war experiences, thinking of it as merely doing a duty in defending, protecting, and preserving our freedoms and way of life.
Their stories need to be incessantly repeated in every generation, especially in schools. Today’s youth are so pre-occupied enjoying those freedoms they have little or no understanding of the hardship and great sacrifice expended to secure them. Contrasting public sentiment during more recent conflicts, most of those serving in World War II had other family members serving, brothers, sisters, uncles, cousins and enjoyed the support of a people united.
