A 17-year-old Conyers resident was shot when he struck a deputy with his car as he left the scene Monday evening, the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office reported.

The deputy had pulled over Frank Jerome McKnight for a traffic stop around 11:50 p.m. at the Shell Food Mart Gas Station on Sigman Road.

During the traffic stop, McKnight struck the deputy with his vehicle and reportedly fled the scene. The deputy fired his weapon at McKnight during the incident. The deputy was reportedly "shaken from the incident" but uninjured, according to Public Information Officer Jodi Shupe.

McKnight was later located at his residence in Conyers. He had sustained a single gunshot wound and was taken into custody and taken to the Atlanta Medical Center without further incident. McKnight was treated and released and jailed on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while license suspended or revoked and driving on a suspended registration.

In keeping with departmental policy, according to a press release, Sheriff Jeff Wigington asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the incident. An internal investigation is also being conducted.
