Salem theater earns 9 awards nominations (April 6, 2011)
Lanae Rose of Salem High School won for best music direction for "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at the third annual Shuler Hensley Excellence in High School Musical Theatre Awards, presented Tuesday night at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
Salem's crew also won the Jubilee Cultural Arts Alliance Scenic Design Grant.
Award highlights include: Overall Production was presented to West Forsyth High School for its presentation of Oklahoma!, the award for Direction was received by Eric Gray for his direction of Oklahoma! presented by West Forsyth High School, Leading Actor went to Mitchell Jones of West Forsyth High School for his portrayal of Curly in Oklahoma! and Leading Actress went to Jamie Harwood of The Lovett School for her role of Marian Paroo in The Music Man.
This was Salem theater's first time entering the awards. The awards recognize the best in musical theatre at the high school level. Forty-one high schools from 12 counties, representing 14 school districts as well as private schools in the greater Atlanta region participated this year. Three judges traveled to the schools to watch performances and chose the top six in each category.
