Rockdale Cares gala on Aug. 13

It's time to shake, rattle and roll as Rockdale Cares throws a 50s and 60s themed gala at the annual Haven House fundraiser on Aug. 13, 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $35 each, at the party this year is at the Our Place day education facility, at 875 Davis Drive, Conyers. The deadline for reservations is Wednesday, Aug. 10. Call 770-922-7272 for more information.

Haven House respite center provides care for loved ones with developmental disabilities so that caretakers can have a respite. Haven House, located in the Light House Village campus on Sigman Road, is currently open only on weekends and holidays, but the goal is to someday be able to have it open during the week as well, said Rockdale Cares Executive Director Barbara Kilpatrick. "I'm hoping one of these days we will reach that goal," she said.

Live entertainment this year includes performances by the Our Place Singers and Swingers, appearances by "Elvis" (Ben Mance), "Willie Nelson" (David Cooper) and "Waylan Jennings" (Andy Smith). Vocal talent and Rockdale Cares client Beth Wright will open the evening with "God Bless America."

Dinner will be catered by The Varsity.

This year's fundraiser includes a silent auction, with items such as a week-long exclusive stay at a private home at St. George's Island, a mountain vacation, gift certificates and coupons, and a basket of 19 bottles of wines to be raffled off. The bidding war in the not-so-silent auction will include footballs signed by the coaches at Georgia Tech and University of Georgia.

This year's theme came about because, "We wanted to something that was really fun, and something that would allow people to see a bit about what we do," said organizer and board member Diane Davis.
