Rockdale Medical Center Auxiliary member Tom Dougherty was honored as the hospital’s Volunteer of the Year at the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 26. After retiring from a 34-year career as a supervisor for AT&T, which brought him to Conyers, the Brooklyn native and Navy veteran committed to volunteering at the hospital after attending a Red Cross blood drive in 2010.
While spends one day a week on the golf course, he spends three days a week helping patients in day surgery by setting up rooms and transporting by wheel chair, among other patient service duties.
Dougherty is the Auxiliary Vice President of orientation for new recruits and visits organizations throughout community to recruit volunteers. Auxiliary President Rachel Woolridge said Dougherty’s dependability and the sheer number of hours he works made him stand out. “He’s very willing to help with anything he can,” she said.
