Restriping to close I-20 EB lanes in Rockdale this weekend

After a holiday weekend respite, Georgia Department of Transportation crews and contractors return to the roadways this weekend for improvements including sections of I-20 in Rockdale and I-285 on the northwest side.

Weather permitting, workers once again will be resurfacing and restriping sections of I-20 and several sign structure projects and a concrete slab replacement effort will be occurring on I-285. Motorists should strongly consider alternate routes to avoid delays in these construction zones:

• In Rockdale County on I-20, two eastbound (EB) inside (left) lanes between Salem Road and U.S. Highway 278/State Route 12 will be closed continuously from 9 p.m., Friday, until 5 a.m., Monday, for resurfacing.

• In Douglas County, two westbound (WB) I-20 lanes between Liberty and Post roads will be closed continuously from 7 p.m., Friday, until 6 a.m., Monday, also for resurfacing. The outside shoulder will be reinforced so that vehicles will be able to use it as a travel lane and thus keep two lanes open at all times; but again, delays are possible.

• In Cobb County, two southbound (SB - Outer Loop) outside (right) lanes between Paces Ferry and South Cobb Drive will be closed continuously from 9 p.m., Friday, until 5 a.m., Monday, for concrete slab replacement and repair. Work on various Top End sign structures north of this area will continue as well - with two eastbound (EB) Inner Loop inside (left) lanes and one westbound (WB) Outer Loop inside (left) lane between Powers Ferry Road and New Northside Drive closed from 9 p.m., Friday, continuously until 5 a.m., Monday.

• Downtown, overnight restriping of both the northbound (NB) and southbound (SB) I-75/85 (Downtown Connector) exit ramps to I-20 eastbound (EB) will occur nightly from 8 p.m., until 6 a.m. The ramps will remain open to traffic throughout the process, but delays are likely and drivers should be extremely cautious. Also, near I-285 Top End, Interstate North Parkway will be closed between New Northside and Northside drives from 1 p.m., Friday, through 11 a.m., Sunday, so that a private contractor can stage a crane for building maintenance. Detours will be posted.

• In Gwinnett County, I-85 will have one northbound (NB) outside (right) lane closed from 8 a.m., until 5 p.m, Saturday, from Jimmy Carter Boulevard to Center Way.

• On Georgia 400 northbound (NB) between Sidney Marcus Boulevard and Glenridge Road, one outside (right) lane will be closed from 7 a.m., until 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, for underground boring while painting activities related to the new MARTA pedestrian bridge will require overnight NB lane closures Friday near Lenox Road.

All of these jobs - as well as others on I-85 and Georgia 400 - will require lane closures and have the potential to create significant traffic delays.

As is the norm during hot summer months, afternoon and evening thunderstorms are possible. Such weather could temporarily halt work or cause it to be postponed completely. Georgia DOT suggests calling 511 or consulting 511ga.org before travelling to learn current work status and traffic conditions.
