A Rockdale County Sheriff's Office patrol deputy is facing desk duty after being arrested and charged for DUI for a single-vehicle wreck on Ga. Highway 212 the evening of July 28.

Deputy Deanna Michelle Burke, 28, reportedly ran over a mailbox and then overturned the 2005 Ford pickup truck she was driving.

Georgia State Patrol Troopers were called to handle the incident. According to GSP spokesperson Lt. Paul Cosper, the investigating Trooper smelled the presence of alcohol and administered standard field sobriety tests.

After she failed those, she was booked into the Rockdale County jail where she was administered a breath test and was found to be over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

According to Sheriff Jeff Wigington, as per department policies adopted in 1991, Burke faces a mandatory 10-day suspension without pay, pending the completion of an internal affairs investigation. In addition, she has been banned from driving county vehicles, lost the ability to have a take-home vehicle for one year, and faces a mandatory evaluation by a mental health professional approved by the Sheriff’s Office, with acceptance of that evaluation and any treatment.

Additional DUI offenses would bring about her termination.

Burke joined the RCSO in 2008 and was assigned to the Uniform Patrol division in December 2010.
