The Porterdale mayor and city council appointed Lt. Jason Cripps as active police chief Tuesday evening, effective immediately.

Porterdale Police Chief Geoff Jacobs resigned from his position after four years of service to pursue other interests, according to Porterdale City Manager Bob Thomson.

“We’re confident with Lt. Cripps and his ability to serve as active police chief,” Thomson said.

The council voted unanimously, with council member Linda Finger absent from the meeting.

After the 60-day interim, the council and mayor will appoint a permanent police chief.

“I’m looking forward to moving forward,” Cripps said, “and to keep giving the quality policing that we have been to the City of Porterdale.”

Cripps began his service for Porterdale in 2000 before moving to the East Point Police Department and serving from December 2003 to August 2008. He then transferred back to Porterdale in 2008.

Jacobs served as uniform division commander for the Snellville Police Department for almost 27 years before coming to Porterdale in 2010. According to his LinkedIn profile, Jacobs worked for the Dade County Corrections and Rehabilitation Department in Miami, Florida, and was a police officer for the Opa-locka Police Department in Opa-locka, Florida, the Palm Beach County Park Police in Lake Worth, Florida and the Lawrenceville Police Department in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
