Don't worry much about orange cones on the area's highways this holiday weekend. Instead, just worry about all those other cars.

Georgia Department of Transportation public relations director David Spear put things very simply when asked about construction projects this weekend: "No closures."

The resurfacing of Interstate 20 in Newton County, usually scheduled for weekends, will not happen this time. Instead, all lanes will remain open east and west.

The other major local project - the rehabilitation of the I-20 interchange at Almon Road - "will not have closures" this weekend either, said DOT spokeswoman Cissy McNure.

The lane closures affected are those scheduled from noon Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2.

However, according to a DOT press release, "be reminded crews may still be working, (and) heavy equipment may remain staged in close proximity to highways."

Of course, "incident management or emergency, maintenance-related lane closures could become necessary at any time on any route," Spear said in the press release.

The holiday will push back the closures of one side of I-20 from mile markers 92 to 95 from Tuesday through Friday, weather, of course, permitting. A flagman may be present, and workers will certainly be, McNure said.
