ATLANTA (AP) - Residents pushing to create a new Georgia city cleared a key hurdle in the Georgia Legislature, but the proposed name of the new community has changed.

A House committee agreed Tuesday that residents in part of DeKalb County should be allowed to vote this summer on whether to create the new city. Tuesday's vote clears a major hurdle for supporters of creating a new city, which could become Georgia's 16th largest city.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/wQfVRd) the proposed name of the new city is now Ashford in the current proposal. It was known as Brookhaven during the campaign to create it.

Republican state Rep. Mike Jacobs of DeKalb County has said that in addition to lower taxes, the new city could be operated more efficiently than DeKalb County's government.
