The West Avenue Mural Painting Day has been rescheduled to Thursday, October 8 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. due to the rainy weather.
The city of Conyers commissioned local artist Jack Whitaker to create a 3-D park scene mural on the north side of the building located at 1162 West Avenue, opposite Mrs. Winner's, at the corner of West Avenue and Dogwood Drive. Building owner and Conyers resident Jim Andersen graciously granted the city use of the building for the mural.
The public is invited to help paint the mural in a "paint by numbers" manner. There is no charge to participate, but a time limit may be enacted depending on the number of citizens that arrive to participate. Paintbrushes and paint will be provided.
"We've had such a good response from the public on the landscaping and streetscape improvements the city has made to West Avenue that we thought we'd take it a step further and invite the public to participate in this finishing touch," said Vince Evans, chairman of the city's transportation committee. "This is a great way to blend celebrating the arts and talents of the community with what will become a landmark piece of art on this Conyers gateway."
It is estimated the mural will take approximately seven weeks to complete. The Sherwin-Williams store on Ga. Highway 138 is providing the paint and supplies for the mural at a discounted price.
Those attending the public painting day on Thursday, Oct. 8 will also enjoy face painting, giveaways and complimentary refreshments.
