Rep. Hank Johnson announced the eight Fourth District students who have been nominated to attend a U.S. Service Academy. At least four students have received appointments to attend a Service Academy: Jeremiah Harding of Heritage High – U.S. Naval Academy, Timothy George Becker of St. Pius X High – U.S. Military Academy (Army), Devin James Crawford of Arabia Mountain High – U.S. Air Force Academy, Adam Steves of the Marist School – U.S. Military Academy, Toronto Thomas of Martin Luther King Jr. High – U.S. Air Force Academy. Also nominated by Congressman Johnson were Xavier Christian Marcel Hightower of Chamblee Charter High – U.S. Naval Academy, Joseph Mears of Southwest DeKalb High – U.S. Naval Academy, Daniel Morrison of the Marist School – U.S. Air Force Academy.
All members of Congress may nominate up to 10 candidates per opening. Academies usually make appointments by March 31 of each year. Those who graduate from a Service Academy will receive a Bachelor of Science degree, be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, and honorably serve in the military for a minimum of five years.
