School board chairman Jim McBrayer confirmed he is running for his second term to the Rockdale County Board of Education Post 1 seat.

McBrayer, Salem High’s former athletic director who retired after more than 39 years teaching, was first elected in 2010 in a five way race for the non-partisan seat.

He was chosen by the other school board members to serve as chairman for 2012-2014.

“One of the main reasons I want to run is because I do think I have something I can contribute in being an educator,” said McBrayer. He pointed out he was the only one out of the seven members who has a background as an educator and teacher.

McBrayer taught for 22 years in Rockdale County, 16 years in Bibb County before that, and a year and a half in Richmond County.

As far as being on the school board, he said, “Four years goes by pretty quickly. I felt like it took about two years exactly how to do the job. I’m going to try to do it again.” During that time, McBrayer said he learned how to work with the six other school board members as a team. “It takes teamwork for a board to function well.”
