Letter to the Editor: Courtney Dillard

Dear Editor: I’m taken back by the campaign tactics of one of the candidates for Rockdale County Commissioner.

Last week I noticed campaign signs for Courtney Dillard at the intersection of Ga. Highway 212 and Klondike Road (in DeKalb County). That’s about two miles outside of Rockdale County. My first thought was why would anybody want to elect this guy? He doesn’t even know what county he’s going to be representing.

But then I saw Mr. Dillard at the Board of Commissioner’s meeting last Tuesday.

During the Board’s executive session, I witnessed Mr. Courtney Dillard working the room and handing out campaign literature. It’s one thing to meet and greet people at board meetings, but it’s another to act like it’s a political rally and hand out literature.

To be honest, I was a bit offended. I’ve been to a number of official government meetings, and I’ve never seen active campaigning like this before.

But that wasn’t the worst part. The worst part came when Mr. Dillard approached me. I couldn’t help but notice Mr. Dillard’s name tag which read Courtney Dillard, Rockdale County Commissioner, Rockdale Going Forward.

Rockdale County Commissioner? It’s bad enough Mr. Dillard doesn't know what county he is trying to win an election in, or that he used an official government meeting as his very own campaign rally, but to portray himself to be someone or something he is not, that’s just over the top!

I quickly pointed out his name tag and he claimed the engraver made a mistake. I went on to tell Mr. Dillard I found his name tag and his blatant campaigning to be disrespectful to the Office of Commissioner and the sanctity of an official meeting. And when I asked about the campaign signs in DeKalb County, well, he gave me another excuse, and blamed it on someone else.

I must note, as he walked away, Mr. Dillard made no attempt to remove his name tag.

I hope the citizens of Rockdale County will study the candidates closely and make an effort to meet the candidates before casting their vote. After meeting Mr. Dillard, I’m afraid we’ll be in for more excuses and blame if he is elected.
