Letha Patterson Phelps left this world Saturday, December 11, 2010. She was 89 years old March 28, 2010. She has gone to join her husband, Clyde, and her parents, Alvis and Viola (Guest) Patterson in a far happier place. She will be reunited with siblings who have gone before her: Allen, Junior, Alene (Moon), Jeanette, and Punk (James). Brothers and sisters who will miss and grieve her going are: Maurice, Port Arthur, TX, Harold, Wauchula, FL and Mary (Parks), Hudson, MI. Other survivors include daughter, Gwen (Phelps) Greene, Winter Haven, FL, Grandson and Granddaughter-in-law, Chuck and Heidi Franklin, Conyers, GA, Great-Granddaughters, Darlene and Nicole Franklin of Boynton Beach, FL and Dahlonega, GA and Great-Great-Grandson, Tristan of Boynton Beach, FL and numerous nieces and nephews in FL, GA, TN, IL, MI and NC. Mrs. Phelps was born in DeSoto County, FL in 1921, attended Hardee County schools, graduating from Wauchula Florida High School in 1940. She moved to Atlanta during WWII where she married Clyde in 1945 when he returned from the European Theater. They were longtime residents and business owners in Rockdale County. They owned and operated Colonial Manor Apartments on S. Main Street, Conyers, for many years (n/k/a Arbor Creek Apartments) Mrs. Phelps was a pioneer in the U. S. Treasury Department (Internal Revenue Service) becoming one of the first women in the country to achieve the position of Revenue Officer (formerly an all male occupation). She retired from IRS in 1976. Her Director honored her accomplishments and superior performance by retiring her employee number for all time. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Conyers, XYZ Club, Wally Byram Airstream Caravan Club-GA unit, Atlanta Family Campers Group, and served as Treasurer for many of the caravans and rallies over the years of her membership. Mrs. Phelps and her husband were instrumental in the planning and successful construction of Top of Georgia Airstream campground facility in Helen, GA. At age 80, she and Clyde developed a subdivision on Tucker Mill Road: Letha Marie Woods. She has resided in Letha Marie Woods with her Grandson and Granddaughter-in-law since July, 2007. She is well loved and will be missed terribly by her family and friends. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 15, 2010 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Scot Ward’s Harry White Chapel, 1299 Milstead Road, Conyers, GA. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. Jeff Meyers officiating; burial immediately thereafter at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens, 677 American Legion Road, Conyers.
