Rockdale County received funding through the Association County Commissioners of Georgia to start a Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students. The GCAPS program was designed to teach high school students about county and state government. These students met once a month visiting and learning about different parts of government. They met at the Rockdale County Courthouse, a Rockdale County Fire Station, Rockdale County Jail, Rockdale County Wastewater Treatment Plant, Rockdale County Cooperative Extension, and attended a Rockdale County Board of Commissioners meeting.

These students also had the chance to visit the Georgia State Capitol in February and attend a meeting in the House, met the Secretary of State Brian Kemp, and took a picture with Governor Nathan Deal.

This program was a rewarding experience for the youth involved.

For more information about the GCAPS program, contact Brittany Johnson, Rockdale County 4-H Agent, at 770-278-7373 or britj112@uga.edu.
