A little rain didn’t dampen the community’s spirits as more than 600 people came out for the first Gregory B. Levett and Sons Funeral Home Inc.’s Back to School Fair and Community Appreciation event in Rockdale on Sunday, July 19, well exceeding expectations for this inaugural event.

Community members were able to receive free dental screenings by Mini Smiles Pediatric, vision and hearing screenings, health screenings by Helping Hands clinic. Children and families also enjoyed freefood from Great American Hot Dog, bounce houses, games and live music to celebrate the upcoming start of the new school year. Public schools start Aug. 1 in Rockdale County and July 31 in Newton County. 

“This is our way of giving back to the community,” said Gregory Levett.  Staff members said, after the long day of celebrations, that their bodies were tired but their “heartswere full.”

Gregory B. Levett and Sons Funeral Home holds Back to School fairs at their other locations in Gwinnett and DeKalb, but this is the first year for the Rockdale Chapel, which is located at 1999 Ga. Highway 138 SE. The funeral home plans to hold the event again next year.
