The Shoal Creek Sharks were crowned Rockdale's Elementary School Reading Bowl champions on Jan. 28. The nine-member team of fourth and fifth-graders reclaimed the title lost last year to Lorraine Elementary School. Coach Debbie Smith said, "They also love the attention they get from their teachers and Principal Craft gave them 25 coupons for free ice cream bars at lunch, two tickets to a Hawks game and is  treating them to lunch on the stage Friday." Smith and her co-coaches Coley Housworth and Terri Anschutz also hold a Georgia Book Award Challenge giving trophies at a year-end ceremony for any 4th or 5th grade student reading 18 or the 20 GBA nominees

In Rockdale County’s inaugural Middle School Reading Bowl, Davis Middle School posted a valiant victory against worthy competitors Jan. 28 at the Rockdale Career Academy. “All the teams competing worked hard to prepare,” said Assistant Coach Cherie Thompson, “Middle school students who had participated as elementary students were excited to be participating again.”
