DiversiTech expansion gets thumbs up from Planning Commission

Zoning changes that would allow DiversiTech to expand its plant on Old Covington Highway were recommended for approval tonight by the Conyers-Rockdale Planning Commission.

DiversiTech, an HVAC equipment manufacturer, wants to expand its 1512 Old Covington Highway plant onto an adjacent lot at 1582 Old Covington Highway. The expansion would add jobs, DiversiTech officials said.

The expansion requires changing the land use from light industrial to manufacturing. It also requires rezoning it from M-1 (Limited Industrial) to M-2 (General Industrial).

"We like them here. We think it's a good move," said Rockdale County planning director Marshall Walker, before the commission voted to approve both changes.

In some other planning commission business:

-The commission approved a special use permit that would allow a full-time daycare center to operate at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 2533 Stanton Road. The church current operates the daycare as a part-time facility.

-A City of Conyers move to expand areas covered by restrictions on adult entertainment businesses was approved. The restrictions, already active in many parts of the city, were left out of some new rezoning codes, including Gateway Village, so there is a move to insert them. The code bans such businesses within 500 feet of a business that sells alcohol, and within 1,000 feet of churches, schools, parks and similar locations-even if those locations are outside the city limits.

Conyers planning director Marvin Flanigan previously told the News that the update follows an unidentified business contacting the city to ask about adult entertainment zoning.

Walker said the county is reviewing its adult entertainment restrictions as well for possible updating.
