A Conyers doctor was arrested by the Drug Enforcement Administration on Monday for prescription drug charges.
Fabio Katureebe Banegura , 64, of Conyers was arrested May 9 and charged with the "unlawful prescribing or ordering of dangerous drugs." He was booked into the Rockdale County Jail.
Katurebee, a family medicine/adult medicine physician, has a practice listed on Milstead Avenue in Conyers and Ga. Highway 278 in Covington.
DEA Agent Chuvalo Truesdell wrote in an email, "Without being specific, all I can say is that his arrest was related to pharmaceutical products. At this juncture, specifics about his prosecution are uncertain and I cannot make any comments until these specifics are known."
The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, which assisted with the arrest, has a deputy assigned to work with the DEA, said RCSO spokesperson Sgt. Jodi Shupe.
Doctors that prescribe controlled substances are required to register with the DEA. Doctors found violating laws regulating controlled substances can be prosecuted through criminal or civil cases or receive administrative sanctions, such as having their license taken away or suspended.
The DEA has prosecuted more than 70 criminal cases against doctors nation-wide since 2003, according to the DEA's website.
Banegura was also previously arrested in Rockdale four years ago for contempt of state or magistrate court.
