(Feb. 10, 12:45 p.m.) A woman was shot and confirmed dead in her silver truck after she crashed into a pump at the Pure gas station Friday morning at the corner of Carroll and Washington streets.

Part of Washington Street at that area remains closed to traffic.

According to a man who works at the gas station where the truck came to rest, he heard a gunshot and turned his attention down Washington Street where he saw the silver Nissan Titan pickup truck coming toward him. He said the truck was coasting aimlessly and he moved away from the area where it eventually came to rest.

According to the witness, the truck was not under power and he was able to get out of the way easily. He said the truck hopped the curb before crashing into a support pole in an area where gas pumps used to be. The man described a young black woman as the driver and the only person in the vehicle. When the truck came to rest, he saw the woman's head go forward and hit the dashboard.

Once the truck came to rest, the man peered inside and said he saw the woman bleeding profusely from the head from what he described as an apparent gunshot. The passenger's side of the truck was shattered and half missing.

Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis was on the scene in the wake of the incident and pronounced the woman dead on the scene. Several family members arrived shortly after and had to be at times restrained from rushing the truck which was covered by a tarp by authorities.
