County and Home Depot to build campsites

Rockdale County is teaming up with Team Home Depot to build campsites at the South Rockdale Community Park Trail Head. In April, the county's Parks Division staff met with representatives from Home Depot who will assist the County with the construction of three camp- sites with Adirondack shelters. A Home Depot grant in the amount of $7,000 will be used to cover the costs of construction, which will include three Adirondack shelters, three fire rings, three picnic tables, and possibly benches and trash receptacles.

Campers familiar with certain state and federal park systems may recognize the little abodes that will be built, known in the East as an Adirondack shelter. The shelters will be approximately 12-foot by 16-foot and accommodate four to six campers.

Home Depot has agreed to provide supplies and the Parks Division is seeking volunteers to assist in the construction of the campsites. Due to liability issues, Home Deport requires all volunteers to be 18-years-old or older. However, younger volunteers and scouts are encouraged to participate and assist with other park projects.

The campsite areas will be prepared by County maintenance crews now through mid-June. Twenty volunteers are being sought for Thursday, June 17, to help set posts in concrete for the shelters. Additionally, approximately 40 volunteers will be needed on the "build day," which is scheduled for Tuesday, June 22.

Volunteer teams of 12 members each are being formed now and volunteers are asked to join one or more of the following teams:

  • Shelter building
  • Picnic table building/installing
  • Bench building/installing
  • Fire ring building
  • Refreshments (water, lunch, snacks)

Volunteers may be asked to provide some of their own tools for the project. For a list of tools that will not be supplies, please see Parks Division staff.

The campsites are planned to be complete by the end of June and available to campers by mid-July. Camping reservations will be taken through the Johnson Park Recreation Center. Some proposed camping rules will include: Camping on permitted campsites only, carry out what you carry in, fires, and other rules and regulations. The proposed rental fees are as follows: Shelters - $8 per night or $15 per weekend. Tent camping is proposed to be $5 per night.

To volunteer for Thursday, June 17, Tuesday, June 22, or both dates, contact the Johnson Park Recreation Center at 770-278-7529 or complete the, "Build a Campsite" volunteer form found on the Rockdale County website, www.rockdalecounty.org, on the Parks and Recreation page.
