A 54-year-old Conyers man was killed in Gwinnett County when a tree split in two during a storm and fell on his car as he was driving Tuesday night.

Matthew Mitchell was reportedly driving southeast in a white Toyota Previa on South Rockbridge Road between North Deshong Road and Marsh Lane.

According to a Gwinnett County police press release, a tree along the right side of the road broke in half and fell on Mitchell's car as he was driving.

"The driver of the vehicle died on scene as a result of the injuries sustained from the collision with the tree," wrote Gwinnett Police. A strong storm was passing through the area at the time. "Heavy winds from this storm appear to be a contributing cause to the accident."

Alcohol and speed did not appear to be a factor, according to the release.

In Rockdale County, the storm downed trees but no one was injured and no major damage was reported.

Rockdale County Sheriff Jeff Wigington said three trees fell on roadways at Corley Road and Mt. Zion, East Shore Drive and Homes Drive, and at 82 Lakeshore Drive.

No flooding was reported either.
