A car caught on fire at the Citgo gas station on Sigman Road near Irwin Bridge Road after it ran into a fuel pump and knocked it over Wednesday night.
The call came in to Rockdale Fire and Rescue shortly before 9 p.m.
A Toyota Camry was reportedly backing out of a parking space in front of the convenience store. The driver reportedly struck a grey Nissan that was parked next to it and then continued backing up with such force, it ran into one of the fuel pumps and knocked it entirely off the island and went over the island.
"The fuel that leaked out of the gas pump ignited," said RCFR spokesperson Sharon Webb.
The car caught on fire and the canopy above it was damaged. But the gas station itself did not catch fire. Gas stations are equipped with a safety shut off valve.
Store employees said there were two women and children in the car. A male bystander reportedly helped get the children out of the car. But by the time first responders arrived on the scene, the driver and occupants of the car had disappeared.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters left the station around 10:18 a.m.
