A suspected bank robber was arrested minutes after the robbery of a SunTrust branch Thursday, thanks to witness descriptions and quick work by Rockdale County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Elan Amir Shabazz, 18, of Conyers was charged with Armed Robbery and Terroristic Threats in connection with a robbery at the SunTrust branch at Honey Creek Village Shopping Center at 3590 Ga. Highway 20.

Around 12:45 p.m., a black male came into the branch and presented a note to the teller that said he was armed and demanded money.

After receiving the money, the suspect drove away in a burgundy Jeep. Witnesses were able to provide a description of the vehicle and a partial tag number to deputies, who arrived at the scene within minutes.

Approximately 10 minutes after the robbery occurred, a deputy spotted a burgundy Jeep on Old Salem Road and was able to follow the vehicle for a short distance before the vehicle pulled over and stopped on McCalla Road.  There was reportedly no resistance from the driver, Shabazz.

“He was taken into custody without any kind of incident,” said RCSO Crime Analyst Michael Camp.

Investigators believe Shabazz was the only suspect involved.

Shabazz is currently being held without bond in the Rockdale County Jail.
