Arrest made in Pebble Brook murder

UPDATE: COVINGTON - William Dontrel Winston has been arrested for the murder of 19-year-old Caylen Gooch.

The Newton County Sheriff's Office took the 20-year-old Winston, of Covington, into custody without incident on charges of felony murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and armed robbery on Friday.

Winston had been arrested earlier by the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office on Thursday, Aug. 13, on two counts of entering auto. He faces a $30,000 bond.

Gooch was identified as the victim after an investigation stemming from the discovery of his body lying in a street in the Pebble Brook subdivision, off Brown Bridge Road, on Aug. 11.

The Newton County Coroner responded to the scene and the victim was transported to the GBI Crime Lab. NCSO said an autopsy will be completed by the Medical Examiner's Office to determine an exact cause and manner of death.

(Aug. 12, 10:17 a.m.) The Newton County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) has identified the victim of Tuesday's shooting as 19-year-old Newton County resident Caylen Gooch.

NCSO is investigating a murder that may have occured Tuesday morning in the Pebble Brook Subdivision, located off Brown Bridge Road in Newton County.

At 5:30 a.m. deputies responded to a call in reference to a deceased male lying in the street.

"The male had been shot and expired," an NCSO press release said.

The victim, a black male appearing to be in his late teens to early twenties, did not have any identification on him, according to the release.

The Newton County Coroner responded to the scene and the victim was transported to the GBI Crime Lab. NCSO said an autopsy will be completed by the Medical Examiner's Office to determine an exact cause and manner of death.

"On August 11, 2015 at 5:30 AM Newton County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a call reference a deceased male lying in the street. The male had been shot and expired. The victim did not have any identification on him," according to a press release.

"The victim is an unidentified black male appearing to be in his late teens to early twenties."
