Traditions

We have been blessed to have a magnificent fall. A simple drive out into the country or around town here in Newton County will attest to that fact.

Tomorrow, they tell us, will be a very cold day. As we think about bringing out the sweaters and making sure there is enough fuel or wood to carry us through, we can look forward to a great tradition. The annual Main Street Covington-sponsored Lighting of the Courthouse will take place Nov. 15.

This event for many has become the traditional kickoff of the Christmas season. This is the same day that Santa officially comes to Covington and the night will be plenty of smiling faces on adults and children alike and hot chocolate and cookies for all.

It is a night that one of our most prized monuments to history, a piece of history that has been seen around the world in shows and movies, officially comes to life for the Christmas season.

As we approach the 15th you will read more in The Covington News about activities planned, including the awarding of the Shining Light recognition to an organization, person or persons who have demonstrated that through their actions they have a big heart. To send your nominations, go to downtowncovington.org and download an application. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Nov. 8.

This whole process might take a little bit of your time, but it will be worthwhile in the long run to keep this fine tradition alive.
