So long, Linder

There was a time when communities like ours knew their congressman. He usually attended all the major functions, patted babies on their head and even made speeches at Rotary and Kiwanis meetings.

Then politicians figured out a way that they could have their party, and themselves if they played their cards right, stay in power for as long as they chose.

Several years ago the party in control started gerrymandering to accomplish the aforementioned goal, and in doing so showed absolutely no concern for their constituents.

As a result of this callous approach to governing, our county was broken up into two districts.

Some residents of Newton County are part of the large 7th district, which includes parts of Gwinnett, Forsyth and all of Barrow and Walton counties.

The reason we are bringing this up again is because our former congressman, John "I could care less about you" Linder (R) has announced that he will not seek reelection.

We know that not because he cared to share his plans with his local constituents, but because we read it in the AJC - an Atlanta-based newspaper. The last time we checked Atlanta was about 40 miles from Newton County.

So Congressman Linder, we would normally wish you well and thank you for representing us in Congress, but since you probably don't even know where Newton County is located, none of us will even notice you're gone.
