This past year has been a year that most of us would like to forget.
The election cycle went way too long, the economy has everyone on edge, and good people who have worked hard all of their lives are struggling.
With all of this doom and gloom there is still plenty for us to smile and have hope about.
We encourage you to put away your worries for a spell, pack the family up, bundle up for warmth and come down to the Covington square Thursday for the annual lighting of Newton County Historic Courthouse.
There will be entertainment by the Oxford Singing Children, T.K. Adams will have his famous Community Band there and members of the Covington Regional Ballet will be dressed in their Nutcracker costumes.
For you Dawg fans, the legendary Vince Dooley will be signing his book at the Mayfield Ace Hardware store.
The lighting of the courthouse will begin at 6 p.m.
But the main event will be the arrival of Santa Claus on the square at 5:30 p.m.
We have heard from an elf that Santa is spending extra time away from the North Pole this year to cheer up all those who are young at heart.
While you are on the square, make sure you visit all of the little shops that make our downtown district so unique.
Please stop by and see our staff, who will be serving free hot chocolate in the circle.
We will be glad to wish you and yours a great big Merry Christmas.
