Our thoughts...Entrance eyesore

The Covington News publishes a Sunday feature called the "Eyesore of the Week." It generally highlights abandoned homes or unkempt property.

We run that for the sole purpose of encouraging the owners into cleaning up the mess they have left for all to see - even our visitors.

Newton County is too beautiful a community to be blighted with such eyesores.

Today we are disappointed to run a photograph of an eyesore that should instead be a showcase of our city's strength and vitality.

Last year members of Keep Covington/Newton County Beautiful made an attempt to beautify the entry way of U.S. Highway 278 at exit 90 of Interstate 20.

We were looking forward to this spring to see how the project turned out - as you can see from the picture, not very well.

There seems to be some confusion over who is responsible for the upkeep of this landscaped plot.

Differences need to be put aside for now and the city should do what it takes immediately to make the entrance way to our city look as beautiful as it can.

Visitors coming to our community need to see and feel the pride that we have in our city. This entry way currently shows the opposite.
