Our thoughts... Seniors

Last Friday we ran an editorial that stressed the fact that a strong school system is essential not only for the welfare and growth of our children but for our county as well. We said that in order for our schools to improve, it would take a strong community effort.

In that vein may we suggest that the seniors of our community who are retired and enjoying a nice tax break from the county repay that break by volunteering two or three hours a week at one of our local schools. Imagine what would happen if there were 30 to 40 volunteers daily in a school. It could be a win-win for our children and teachers and for seniors who give of their time.

With budget cutbacks, teachers have more to do, larger classrooms and less help. There are many children who do not have the opportunity to enjoy the individual attention a senior might bring to them. Seniors will benefit from the contact with children.

To volunteer, contact the principals at a school near you. The time you volunteer will not only benefit you, but also the whole community.
