Our thoughts... Let's clean up our act

In Mexico near the border towns there is so much trash along the roadways that it ruins the natural beauty of the area.

Unfortunately, there’s a buildup of trash and debris along our roadways in Newton County, and it’s ruining our beautiful countryside.

It’s hard to drive anywhere these days and not be embarrassed and disgusted at the trash that is littering our highways and byways.

Now that the weather is getting better and a touch of green is starting to sprout, the buildup of trash is even more noticeable.

We realize that money is tight and that there is no extra money available to keep our beautiful roadways clean.

But we would like to suggest some ideas on how we can accomplish this mission.

There are numerous civic and nonprofit groups in the area. Maybe they could find some volunteers to work on a Saturday to pick up trash.

Maybe for punishment our local judges could have more offenders spend some time out in the fresh air, paying for their indiscretions by picking up trash.

We are sure some of the residents of the county jail would enjoy the exercise on a nice spring day.

Since the unemployment rate is so high in our county, maybe we could have some of those folks actually work for those extended unemployment checks. If we asked them, we are sure a majority would volunteer to help keep our roads clean.

The best thing, though, would be to think and not throw out trash to begin with. There is no excuse for our beautiful city and county looking like this.

If you or your group decide to volunteer to clean up our county road sides, let us know. We would be proud to put your picture in The Covington News.

Let’s start showing our pride in our community. You can do your part and adopt a section of roadway to keep clean through Keep Covington/Newton Beautiful. Here’s a link:

Do not litter. If you do, shame on you.
