We have written a great deal about the building of a Miracle League field here in Newton County.
This is one of those very worthy projects that have gotten caught up in our budget crisis.
There is absolutely no money being allocated for it.
This special field, when built, will allow our local disabled children a chance to enjoy the great American pastime of baseball.
Most of us have played in one league or another in our lifetime or at least enjoyed a day at the ballpark and as result have enjoyed the team spirit, confidence-building and entertainment the sport provides.
It is hard for us to understand sometimes that there are children who will never have this experience unless they have a field of dreams built in order to accommodate their needs.
The Newton County Recreation Department, under the direction of Tommy Hailey, has taken this project under its wings and is in the midst of raising money to construct a Miracle League field and concession/bathroom area. At times the money barely trickles in and that is why is it so important to support the fundraisers that benefit the project.
Many groups like the Rotary and Lions have held fundraisers.
If you like to play golf, you too can participate in a worthwhile fundraiser.
On June 9 the local cable company will be sponsoring a tournament fundraiser at 1 p.m. (lunch and registration start at 11:30 a.m.) at the Oaks Course on Crowell Road.
If you would like to enter a four-person team or to sponsor a hole, contact the Newton County Recreation Department or e-mail Adrienne.swinton@chartercom.com.
Your contribution will go a long way in helping build this dream field and it will truly be a miracle to the families who will enjoy the use of it.
