Our thoughts... Back to school

You might not want to let your school age children read this — it might make them nervous.

It’s hard to believe it’s almost time for school to resume.

As sure as school is starting back is the annual Back 2 School Block Party, which will be held this year on the Covington square Aug. 1 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.

The main sponsor of this event, which has been a blessing for parents with school age children for the past four years, is the Main Street Covington program along with the help and guidance of Washington Street Community Center Director Bea Jackson.

This year 1,000 bags of school supplies are being prepared for children in grades K-8.

One local firm, Michelin Tread Technologies, has donated the 1,000 book bags.

There is still need for donations either in school supplies or monetary donations as each bag of goodies cost between $5 and $7.50.

If you would like to help, contact the WSCC at (770) 786-4002 or Main Street at (770) 385-2077 or you can drop your donations off at the Washington Street Center located at 4138 School Street. The deadline is July 26.

We applaud the efforts of Main Street members and the folks that run the WSCC; it’s this type of community effort to help neighbors that helps everyone survive our tough economic times.
