Long-distance relay

The tents have been struck and the walkers are recuperating and making up for sleep lost overnight Friday at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event for Newton County.

Cancer survivors, their care-givers and friends gathered to raise money and awareness to battle this disease.

We profiled one incredible survivor and volunteer, Becky Byrum, on Friday. She's a lung cancer survivor and a long-time volunteer with Relay for Life. You can read her story online at covnews.com.

As with Special Olympics, Relay for Life is a fantastic event that pulls our community together.

We salute the walkers and everyone whose work makes this event possible and so memorable.

If you were unable to participate at the event itself, you can still help out. The battle against cancer is ongoing, even in a down economy, and your donations are needed to help find a cure.

As Becky noted, cancer seems to touch every family at some point, and the American Cancer Society is there, funding research and serving as a resource of services and knowledge.
