We had the opportunity to visit with Dr. Roderick Sams the principal of Newton High School this week. For those of you who have not had an opportunity to meet Dr. Sams we encourage you to do so.

We continue to think he is a breath of fresh air in the education system and will be the change agent that Newton High needs. We also took a tour of the school and it was refreshing to see a clean environment and happy smiling faces of students, who showed respect and discipline.

As we have said before, Newton High carries the name of our county, and many in this community consider it the flagship of the Newton County Education System. Many of our local leaders walked its halls and were shaped into the people they are today as a result of the experience they had while a Ram.

In recent history the school had lost some of its luster. Dr. Sams, his staff and teachers have in a short period brought back pride and a positive approach to education that is needed in our flagship school. In our discussions he shared with us some innovative programs that are on the horizon for the students of Newton High, and again we were impressed.

Newton High is right now an unpolished gem, and we think Dr. Sams is doing the right things to polish that gem to its former brilliance.

Go Rams!
