Election season heats up

We are glad that some qualified candidates have either thrown their hats in the ring or are thinking about running for the three soon to be vacant seats on the Newton County Board of Education.

With a new superintendant, we need intelligent, visionary leadership on the board - people who know and are passionate about the success of our community.

If you have been on the fence about seeking political office, now is the time to hop down and become involved in our children's and community's future.

We also are more than pleased to see some folks running for the seat currently held by Toney Collins, who is our state representative in District 95.

It's bad enough that the 95th encompasses just a sliver of Newton County; it's worse that we have no voice to represent it.

Our Thoughts: Remembering Nancy VanKleeck

The Covington News would like to take a moment to remember Mrs. Nancy VanKleeck. We became acquainted with her a few years back while she was asking for information about the jail log. She had a ministry in which she would write letters to inmates telling them about Jesus. She was able to write over 11,000 letters. She was a true woman of character. We will miss her.
