Council pay raises

Where’s the transparency?

It has come to light that members of the Covington City Council have approved a 50 percent raise for themselves and the mayor, effective in January 2014. The pay change was among amendments to the city charter that received final approval in May 2012.

But a check of regular council meeting minutes and videos indicates that the proposed raises were never publicly discussed. (You can read our story at Covnews.com.)

Council members say that the raises are warranted, both because they haven’t received a raise in a very long time and because as Covington grows, their duties are taking an increasing amount of time and energy.

They believe they deserve a raise. We understand that.

What we don’t understand is why this had to be done so far "under the radar."

Our Thoughts: Remembering Nancy VanKleeck

The Covington News would like to take a moment to remember Mrs. Nancy VanKleeck. We became acquainted with her a few years back while she was asking for information about the jail log. She had a ministry in which she would write letters to inmates telling them about Jesus. She was able to write over 11,000 letters. She was a true woman of character. We will miss her.
