Sunday's edition contained a special section detailing ways the city of Covington and Newton County were working their way out of the current recession. Unfortunately, in the same edition we published a front page story about the failure of McIntosh Bank.

While the bank's failure was more bad news about our local economy, we were pleased to find that CharterBank out of West Point had taken over control of McIntosh's assets and comforted that the Federal Deposit Insurance Agency was protecting McIntosh's customers.

CharterBank should offer an improvement in customer service and convenience since the bank has 17 branch locations instead of four.

Our hope is that no jobs are lost in the transition and that CharterBank will become a significant community partner - visible at fundraisers and a partner in education as McIntosh was.

We also hope this is the last bank failure in the state, but all we can do is hope.
