In Sunday’s paper we ran a story about how local businessmen and other volunteers are mentoring local youths. If you missed it, you can read it at covnews.com

We have an abundance of successful baby boomers in our community, many of whom are retired and are enjoying the fruits of their labors.

Newton Mentoring Inc. is looking for volunteers who are willing to share their time working with our local schoolchildren. Sometimes opportunities come along that allow you to pay back your community for the blessings you have received from living in it. In this case, an added bonus is the opportunity to really make a difference in the life of a child.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, training will be offered from noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 12 and Sept. 14 in the second-floor conference room of United Bank, 7200 Highway 278 in Covington.

The director of Newton Mentoring Inc. is Margaret Washington.
